about

Every album has some kind of a story behind it. Most albums have different stories than others, and that’s a great thing because if all stories were the same, music would probably be incredibly boring. Unless, of course, the point is to make boring music, but even that is a completely different story. To deliberately make boring music can be as complex as creating interesting music, it’s just kind of the opposite way of thinking. Instead of trying new things that no one has ever heard before, one would try to make music that is similar to existing music. And there’s a lot of existing music to choose from. But the word boring is also subjective, because even musical things that have never been done before can still be regarded as sounding boring. See? Complex. Ah, whatever.

With this album you are currently reading the story of, we did not try to make uninteresting music and we believe we succeeded, but the hardest part about this is not that it’s so unique. Because it’s not that unique. Speaking of stories, this album has exactly the same story as the previous one.

We recorded both “Butterfly”-albums during the same session in Volta, together with Geert van der Beek who did a beautiful sound on both (of course on both because it was the same session, what did you expect?). We recorded too much good stuff for one album, but making a double album would’ve been pushing it. So here is “Flight Of A Drunken Butterfly - Volume 2”, containing the only recording from the session that is not completely improvised. “Throw The Baby Out” is a very loose 30-minute take on what was at the time an unfinished composition by Luka. This is the one we can actually play live. It would be cool if people would play this on the radio and make it a hit! Or how about the Grammy’s? That would be fun, fuck commercialism!

With both albums now being out there in the world, we released all of the material that was recorded during that Volta session, which leaves no leftover tracks to be dug up in the future for bootlegs, rare outtakes or 50th anniversary bonus tracks. These two albums form the definitive, two-winged drunken beast that has come out of the first chapter of our collaboration. Which in turn opens the door for the second chapter, whatever that may turn out to be. The “Swim Of The Strung Out Whaleshark”? Who knows?

Again, many thanks to Volta for providing “rehearsal” and recording space, and many thanks to Geert for doing an amazing job on the recording and mixing with his beautiful analog equipment, knowledge and skills.
