about

When Jochem asked me to contribute a 15-minute video of music to include in his live stream school project, I saw it as a fun challenge to compose a new piece in limited time and decided quite quickly that the final result should be a collaborative effort. Since these times of social distancing and internet streaming stand so starkly in contrast against the essence of culture and musical expression, I feel we need some form of community now, maybe more than ever. So luckily, this group of amazing musicians were happy to join me in the recording session for this project, and none other than Ard D.C. collaborated in the form of some great visual material (which is part of the digital download and can also be found in the link below).

The video, including two new pieces, premiered on October 28th, 2020 on a 24-hour stream, together with lots of other music and art curated by Jochem and his classmates. It's a great initiative, so please do check out the full selection below to discover some lovely stuff.

About the music:

At the time I was just working on an open tuning for guitar based on the harmonic overtones of tower bells, and the first thing that came flowing out of my hands while playing around with the tuning was what very quickly became the solo guitar composition 'Bells'. In the end, the piece has few to do with the actual sound of bells (although I did find some spots to add a couple of nice flageolets), nor bears the spontaneous recording any similarities to a solo piece any longer, with George, Marco, Marcos and Lini beautifully improvising along with the swirly chords and noise crescendo.

'With Dazzling Slack' is a fragment of an ambient improvisation I recorded with Lini as a way to relax and prepare for rehearsal, based on loops of guitar and bass. I layered the recording in post-production for extra spatial effects.

'Lookin Back Upon the Night' was not included in the video, but features Jochem and his brother Daniël playing synth and bass in a recording we did as a trio a couple of months earlier. A river of melancholic piano chords expands into a lake of electronics and guitar loops, letting the melody ripple on the surface and revealing the creatures underneath.
