“Music is expression. Or in the case of this album, expression is music. And music is like glue; it sticks everything together. Things that make no sense at first can start making sense when music gets involved. In fact, without music, nothing would make sense at all. So in that way music is pretty much equal to communication, because without communication, nothing really makes sense either. And musicians that do communicate make better music than those who don’t. At least for me. Apparently, this is also true for my fellow guitar freak Benedict. As a result of his enthousiasm for me communicating with myself (Krultanden, 2018, solo improvisations), I wondered what it would be like to communicate with him in the same kind of way. Instead of introspective string stroking, it would probably sound much more extrospective. Reaching out in contrast to reaching in. Banter instead of mere thought. Out of curiosity I asked him to do an album of improvised music together, and this collaboration is what came to birth. It worked out like a butterfly crawling out of its cocoon to go party hard and get shit-faced. So I believe that’s a positive thing! I guess you could call this a party album, and I suggest that you do so.”

“Making “Flight Of A Drunken Butterfly” was a beautiful, spontaneous and interesting project to work on. All the “rehearsals” we spent playing with each other without thinking were very powerful. Sometimes they even felt like emotional releases for me. Because you have the freedom to do everything you want with the guitar, there’s a lot of undiscovered feelings that show themselves while jamming. The recording of it felt very natural and those takes were some of the best sessions we had. Even with the engineer watching, I never felt restricted or held back. I would follow Luka where he would go and vice versa. My brain was almost completely shut off around 80% of the time. Just letting myself go and playing what felt right. I’m proud of what we’ve done and I’m glad to give this album a place in the universe.”

Many thanks to Volta for providing “rehearsal” and recording space, and many thanks to Geert for doing an amazing job on the recording and mixing with his beautiful analog equipment, knowledge and skills.
